Vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) are medium‑voltage switching devices that interrupt fault currents by extinguishing the arc inside a vacuum interrupter. They are compact, reliable, and require less maintenance than oil or SF6 breakers, making them common in substations, industrial plants and distribution systems (typically up to ~38 kV). VCBs offer fast interruption, long service life and low environmental impact, but require inspection of contacts, mechanism and insulation before purchase.
Verify rated voltage, continuous current and breaking capacity match your system. Inspect contact wear, operating mechanism condition, manufacturing date, maintenance records and compatibility with existing switchgear. Ask for test reports (timing, contact resistance) and proof the vacuum interrupters are intact.
Secure the mechanism in the transport position, tag and isolate terminals, protect moving parts and contacts, and pack in a rigid crate or skid. Use a carrier experienced with electrical equipment, insure the shipment and include all documentation for customs and installation.
Perform periodic mechanical operation tests, check contact resistance and visible contact condition, lubricate moving parts per manufacturer guidance, inspect insulation and control wiring, and run timing tests. Follow the maker’s service intervals—typically annual or based on operating cycles.
