Box and pan brakes (finger brakes) are sheet metal bending machines with removable fingers that let operators form boxes, pans, and complex profiles. They combine clamping with segmented fingers to create internal bends and small-radius folds that a standard press brake cannot. Available in manual, mechanical, or hydraulic drives, these machines suit fabrication shops, HVAC work, and any job needing repeatable, precise box-style bends.
Inspect frame straightness, finger condition, hinge wear and pin clearance, clamp bar operation, and the condition of dies. For powered units, check hydraulics, seals, pumps, clutch/brake, and controls. Ask for maintenance records and test bends if possible.
Secure the machine to a lowboy or flatbed using chains through forklift pockets or lifting points. Remove or lock loose fingers and tooling, pad exposed edges, protect the clamp and controls, and note weight/CG for permits. Use a lift with proper capacity for loading.
Regularly lubricate hinges, pins, and sliding surfaces; inspect and tighten clamp fasteners; replace worn fingers and dies; check hydraulic fluid and seals on powered units; and calibrate the clamp bar and backstops for accurate bends.
